In the summer of 1787, in a hot room in Philadelphia, a man stood up and told the rest of them exactly how the country would die.

If you let the small states vote as equals to the large ones, he said, you hand a minority the power to overrule the majority in everything that matters. He did the arithmetic out loud. The seven smallest states held less than a third of the people. Under the plan on the table, that third could outvote the other two-thirds, and could keep doing it forever. He called it a fundamental and perpetual error. He said it would bring disease, convulsions, and finally death itself.

His name was James Wilson, and they built it anyway.

We are living in the death-itself part now. A man in Wyoming has more than sixty times the say in the Senate that a woman in California has. The same arithmetic built the Electoral College, and the College has handed the office to the loser of the popular vote more than once in living memory. The minority sits on the majority’s chest. Wilson watched it coming from two hundred and forty years off and could not stop it.

He arrived with nothing. A Scot off the boat at twenty-three, no money and no name. He read law, got good at it, got famous at it, and by the time the convention met he could out-argue almost anyone in the building. He spoke more than every delegate but one. He signed both the Declaration and the Constitution, one of only six men who did. And the thing he kept saying, over and over, was the simplest and most dangerous idea in the room: the people are the legitimate source of all authority. Not the states. Not the men with property. The people.

He meant individuals. The government, he told them, is not a club of states shaking hands. It is built out of human beings, one at a time, and it answers to them one at a time.

Most of the room hated this. Roger Sherman wanted the public kept as far from the levers as possible. Elbridge Gerry, whose name we still spit out every time a district map gets drawn into the shape of a salamander, warned the convention about the excess of democracy. The people, Gerry said, are dupes. William Paterson said he would sooner kneel to a despot than let population decide who held power.

Wilson lost most of those fights. But while the others were out of town on a break, he sat on the small committee that actually drafted the thing, and he did the one piece of work that outlived all the rest. An early version of the preamble opened by reciting the states, New Hampshire and the others, like a guest list. Wilson cut it down to a beginning and wrote a single word in front of it. We.

We the People. Three words, and the people came first, ahead of the states, ahead of everything. When a later draft tried to slip the states back up front, he shoved them behind the people again. He guarded that one sentence like a man who knew it was the only thing in the document that would still matter in two centuries. In the end the states dropped out of the line completely. Just the people, and the United States they were about to invent. He was right about that too.

He was no saint, and I will not dress him as one. The man who could see the whole future of self-government could not see a Black man as a whole person. Wilson kept a slave for years. At the convention he was the one who set the three-fifths arithmetic on the table, counting human beings as fractions to settle a quarrel over seats. He freed his own slave, eventually, in 1794. The clearest eye in the room had a blind spot the size of a plantation, and the country is still paying that bill.

The end was squalid. Wilson could not stop speculating on land he did not have the money to buy, and the debts ate him alive. A sitting justice of the Supreme Court spent his last year hiding in a rented room over a tavern in North Carolina, dodging the men he owed, until the summer fever took him. No one announced it. There was no state funeral for the man who wrote We the People. His headstone in Philadelphia carries the wrong date for his death, which is about the most honest mistake the country ever made, because by then we had already stopped paying attention.

So they buried him twice. Once in the ground, broke and hunted. Once in the story, where Jefferson and Madison and Hamilton got the statues and Wilson got a footnote, on the days he got anything at all.

Here is the part that should keep you up. He was right about nearly all of it. Jefferson came around. Madison came around. The country widened the vote, started electing its senators directly, and the courts finally landed on one person, one vote, which is just Wilson’s entire life in four words. The man won the argument. He won it from the grave, decades after they put him in it.

And he still lost. Because the one flaw he begged them not to build, the one that lets a minority sit on the majority and call it law, they welded into the deepest part of the machine, and it is still there, and it is still doing precisely what he said it would do. PrumpTutin does not govern a majority. He never has. He rules from on top of us through the exact mechanism Wilson diagnosed in that hot room in 1787 and named a sickness that ends in death.

We the People. He gave us the three best words we own. Then we let the states crawl back in front of them the long way around, through the Senate, through the College, through the district maps still named after Gerry. Wilson saw it coming. He stood up and told them. They thanked him, voted him down, and carved the wrong date on his grave.

The people are the legitimate source of all authority. Somebody ought to tell the people.

She was sixteen the year everyone handed her a map of a country she was already standing in, and not one of the people drawing it had ever been there.

I think about her sometimes, the woman she became, because she got out, and the getting out took her most of two decades, and the country was only this: that she wanted someone. That was the whole landmass. An ordinary fact, the same fact that has been arriving in human chests since there were chests, no stranger than being hungry, no more a problem than weather. But she did not get to find that out for herself, slowly, the way you are supposed to find things out. The maps got there first. They always do. They were waiting in the magazines on the drugstore rack and in the folklore the older girls passed down at the lockers and in the long shadow of a doctor in Vienna who had decided a century earlier that a woman wanting anything was a symptom of having wanted her father, and what all of those maps agreed on, despite agreeing on nothing else, was that the country was dangerous and that she should not trust her own feet in it.

Below the line: the three maps that cost her twenty years, the doctor in Vienna whose name nobody remembers but everyone still obeys, and the spring afternoon when a fifteen-year-old asked her the question — and she felt her own hand move toward the drawer before she’d decided anything.

I want that on the table before I say anything else, because the rest of this is an argument about how a country gets walked downhill, and I was on the path too, in a chair, with the fight on.

A country does not fall the way a tree falls. A tree falls because something rotted and gravity noticed. A country falls the way a stadium goes up. On purpose. On a budget. With a man at the gate selling tickets to the thing that is burying you. I have watched a few things get built in 80 years, software companies and computer stores and a racing school and the inside of more boardrooms than I would wish on a man I disliked, and I know the difference between a thing that collapsed and a thing somebody poured the footings for. A 4,500-seat arena is the second kind. Nobody trips and falls into one.

So before the rest of it, look at the cage on the lawn.

With Trump, they say, it is always about the money. They are half right, and half right is the most dangerous thing a true statement can be, because it sends you looking in the wrong pocket.

Before I disagree with them, listen to an old man. George Washington Plunkitt ran a ward for Tammany Hall a hundred and twenty years ago, and he sat on the courthouse bootblack stand and explained, on the record, how he got rich off public office. He called it honest graft. He learned where the city meant to build, bought the land first, sold it back, and kept the difference. I seen my opportunities and I took ’em, he said, and he said it proudly, because he had worked out that a man who robs you to your face is harder to arrest than one who hides it. Plunkitt is the honest ancestor here. Hold him in your mind. We will need him to measure the fall, because the men running the lawn have out-Plunkitted Plunkitt, and they did it with a tax deduction.

Somebody charged a million and a half dollars for a seat on the White House lawn. Follow the people who are half right and you go hunting that money in Trump’s wallet, and you do not find it there, and you decide there was no crime. That is the trap. The dollar was never headed for his pocket. The dollar was the price of a door.

Take the man who wrote the million-dollar check. He did not buy a fight. He bought a reception, a handshake, a photograph with the president, and for two and a half million he bought a minute at a microphone on the Fourth of July. The photograph is the asset. He will not hang it for his mother. He will carry it into the next meeting where a federal decision is pending and set it on the table without a word, and the photograph will do the talking. That is what a million and a half buys. Not a chair. A witness who outranks the law.

Take the fighter in the cage on that same grass. He gave his knees and his face to the show. The company that owns him calls him an independent contractor, which is the legal way to owe a man nothing, no benefits, no bargaining, classified that way on purpose. The lawn got a seven-hundred-thousand-dollar repair budget. The fighter got a flat fee and a flag patch. Set him beside the man with the photograph and the whole arrangement stands there in two bodies. One paid a million to be seen. One bled for scale.

Take the citizen who actually owns the lawn. He did not get a seat. He got a field a few hundred yards south and a free pass to watch his own house on a screen, eighty-five thousand of him, standing outside a fence, looking in. No tickets sold to the public, the man who ran the show said so himself. Mary at the dinner table paid for that lawn for forty years out of every check and watched it on a jumbotron from the strip of grass they let her stand on.

Two rivers of money run through this, and they keep getting stirred together until you cannot see the bottom. One is the fight. The UFC’s parent swears it lost thirty million on the night, an investment in attention, and when reporters went looking for the loss they could not find it, and the company did not help them look, and the president bought between fifteen and fifty thousand dollars of that company’s stock a couple of weeks after the card was set. File that one and keep it.

The other river has his name on it. They call it Freedom 250, a thing he announced in December to throw the party. It does not sell fight tickets. It sells him. The price list is written down and the New York Times has it. A million for the reception and the photograph. Two and a half for the microphone. Ten at the top. All of it tax-deductible, gathered by his own fundraiser, and built, as far as anyone can tell, to step around the one commission Congress set up to run the birthday with rules attached. Plunkitt at least called it graft. These men call it a charity and hand you the receipt to write off on your taxes.

I have been inside a fence like that. I spent forty years around boards of directors and user groups and racing committees, and I have written the check that was really for the chair next to the man who could say yes. I flew places to be in rooms. I sponsored the table, shook the hand, told myself it was business, and it was business. That is the part that should frighten you. The machinery on that lawn is the machinery I sat inside, only now the man at the head of the table is the government, the chair is the country, and the photograph is a permit. I know the move because I made it, for money, and called it doing business.

So, when someone tells you it is always about the money, agree, then tell them they are looking in the wrong place. The money is not the prize. The money is the door, and what is for sale behind it is the one thing a republic is not supposed to have a price for. Greed you can prosecute. A man who steals has a sentence waiting. This is worse, because nothing here is hidden. The stock purchase is disclosed. The lawsuit is filed. The tiers are typed in plain English with dollars beside them, like a menu, because that is what it is. The corruption is not in the shadows. It is in the brochure.

A government that prints the price of its own attention has already told you what you are worth without a million dollars. You are worth the field. You are worth the screen and the long look through the fence at the lawn you paid for. That is the answer to who got the money, and it was answered before the question was asked. The money went where it was always going, to the man and the apparatus that wears him, and you were never going to be in the photograph. You were always going to be on the grass, outside the fence, watching the house you own change hands.

A million and a half dollars for a folding chair on ground that belongs to you. They did not hide the receipt. They framed it, and they hung it where you cannot afford to stand.

I notice, when the season for it comes around again, that the word we have for the evening is only a word for a crowd, celebrare, the verb the old language kept for the act of thronging, of pressing in great numbers toward a thing until the thing itself is lost behind the pressing, and I find I can no longer quite hear it as a word for joy, only as a word for how many of us there are, and how close, and how turned the same way.

I want to be fair about it. He didn’t make much of a first impression. He was assigned, which is the worst thing that can happen to a writer, and he came stapled to Freud, which is the second worst. I was a kid with a motorcycle and a future, and he was a dead Swiss psychiatrist with a great deal to say about dreams. I skimmed what had to be skimmed, passed whatever had to be passed, and walked out into the next six decades without him. He died the following year. I have checked the dates. I do not believe the two events are connected, but at 80 you check everything.

Then a few months ago I tripped over an article. That’s the only honest verb. I wasn’t looking for him. I was doing what I do every day now, documenting a country coming apart in the next tab over, and somebody had written about an interview Jung gave in 1938, with Europe going under, in which an American reporter asked him to explain the dictators. I read it. Then I read it again. Then I went and found the books I had ducked in school, and I have been reading him every night since, at a desk, with a notebook, like the student I refused to be the first time around.

People ask why. They expect me to be reading the news harder, or the historians, or the angry men who are angry about the same things I am angry about. I read those too. But it is Jung I reach for when I want to understand a thing instead of just being furious at it, and I have finally worked out why, and the answer is a little embarrassing, so here it is.

A Word Before the Essay

There have been complaints. I’m too negative. I’m fixated on PrumpTutin. I write like a man circling the same drain. I’ve read them all, and I understand.

Here is the truth of it: this was never the plan. When I started Burnt Ground the intention was economics, history, and stories — the things I’d spent eighty years collecting. Then the news kept happening, and I kept answering it, and somewhere along the way the answering became the publication. Watching a democracy rot in real time has a way of monopolizing a man’s attention. I won’t apologize for covering it. I’ll concede the ratio got away from me.

So, here’s one from outside the park. No politics in it — well, almost none. Edison shows up, and Edison was politics with a laboratory. It’s about electricity: what it’s actually doing in the wire, why the engineers you ask can’t tell you, and a question I carried for forty years before it finally gave up an answer. History, a little economics, a story. The way this was supposed to work.

PrumpTutin will keep. He isn’t going anywhere. Unfortunately.

Edison built the electric grid, then tried to strangle the better idea with a pile of dead dogs. The physics won without him.

A confession. I have been hunting this answer for most of my adult life. I went to engineering school. I read the books. I once cornered an actual electrical engineer and asked him, plainly, what electricity is doing in the wire — and he answered the way engineers answer: correctly, completely, and in a language spoken by no living person. That was decades ago. I kept the question in a drawer and took it out every few years to confirm it still had no answer. Now it does, and you’re getting it, because I refuse to be the only one carrying this around. I waited forty years. You can spare ten minutes.

Flip the switch on your wall and nothing races to meet you. That is the first thing to understand about electricity, and almost nobody does. The light comes on, the coffee maker hums, and you picture a flood of electrons sprinting from some distant power plant into your kitchen. They don’t. The electrons in your copper wire move at a crawl — a fraction of a millimeter per second. Under household current they don’t even bother going anywhere. They shuffle back and forth in place, sixty times a second, covering about a micron each way. A micron is smaller than a single red blood cell. The electrons in your walls are commuters who never leave the platform.

What reaches you is pressure, not matter. The energy travels down the line as a chain reaction of electromagnetic force, near the speed of light, while the electrons themselves sit there vibrating. The wire delivers a rumor, not a shipment.

That shuffling-in-place is alternating current, and it is half the story. The other half is direct current, which actually does march — electrons drifting steadily in one direction, the voltage holding flat as a ruler. Direct current is what a battery gives you, what a solar panel gives you, and what every chip in your phone and laptop demands, because solid-state electronics can’t tolerate a wobble. Alternating current is the other animal. Its field flips polarity on a schedule — sixty cycles a second in the United States — so the electrons oscillate instead of travel. That is what comes out of the wall and turns the motor in your refrigerator.

Alternating current is also the more temperamental of the two. Direct current answers to plain resistance and nothing else. Alternating current has to fight reactance — the way coils and capacitors shove back against a field that refuses to hold still — so the grid burns real effort keeping voltage and current marching in step. Utilities call it managing the power factor. Direct current never has to think about any of it.

So why did the country wire itself on the fussier system? One word: distance. Push current through a wire and the wire fights back, and that fight comes out as heat. Joule worked out the bill more than a century and a half ago, and it is brutal — the power you lose climbs with the square of the current. Double the current, quadruple the waste. The only way to move power across a state without cooking the copper is to cut the current and jack the voltage up to make up for it. Alternating current does this for nothing. Run it through a transformer and you can step it up to hundreds of thousands of volts for the long haul, then step it back down to something that won’t kill the man changing the lamp.

Direct current, in 1890, could not do that. And that was the whole war.

Thomas Edison had built his empire on direct current. His system worked — inside a radius of about a mile. Past that the voltage sagged and the power bled off as heat, which meant wiring a city on Edison’s current required a generating station every few blocks. Expensive. And Edison had already buried a fortune in it.

Nikola Tesla had the other idea, the one with the mathematics behind it: alternating current and the polyphase motor, backed by George Westinghouse’s money and nerve. Tesla’s current could leave a power plant at the foot of a waterfall and arrive in a city hundreds of miles off with most of its energy still intact. On the engineering, it wasn’t close.

The two men had history. Tesla worked for Edison first, fresh off the boat in 1884, and rebuilt his ailing DC dynamos so well that Edison — by Tesla’s account — had promised him fifty thousand dollars for the job. When Tesla came to collect, Edison told him he didn’t understand American humor. Tesla quit and spent a stretch digging ditches for two dollars a day. Then Westinghouse found him. Edison saved fifty thousand dollars and lost the electric grid. It stands as the most expensive joke ever told in American business.

Edison couldn’t win on the physics. So he quit arguing physics. He set out to make the public afraid of alternating current instead. He bankrolled a man named Harold Brown, who staged demonstrations for the newspapers — electrocuting stray dogs and cats with AC, the entire point being to brand Tesla’s current as the one that kills. Then Edison’s people quietly helped build the first electric chair, designed on purpose around Westinghouse’s alternating current, so that the state’s first execution would weld AC to death in the public mind forever. William Kemmler died in that chair in 1890. The execution was botched and grotesque. Edison’s camp counted it a success.

Sit with that one. A man who could not out-engineer his competitor reached instead for fear and a body count. When the truth costs you money, you don’t fix your product. You teach people to be afraid of the better one.

The math didn’t care. Westinghouse and Tesla lit the 1893 World’s Fair in Chicago on alternating current, in front of the entire country, and it ran flawlessly. Then they harnessed Niagara Falls and sent its power to Buffalo, miles away, with almost nothing lost on the wire. The argument was finished. Edison’s own company eventually walked away from his position — the firm that became General Electric built its future on the current he had spent years trying to kill. The dogs died for nothing.

Here is the twist Edison didn’t live to enjoy. A century later, direct current came back. Not because Edison was right — he wasn’t — but because the technology finally grew into the idea. Modern solid-state valves can take enormous alternating voltages, convert them to direct current, fire them across a continent or under an ocean, and convert them back to AC at the far end. This is high-voltage direct current, and for the longest, heaviest hauls it now beats alternating current at its own game. It shrugs off the reactance that drags down long AC lines. It ignores the skin effect that crowds AC current onto the outer rind of a wire and wastes the copper underneath. And it can splice together power grids running at different frequencies that would otherwise refuse to speak to one another.

So your wall socket still runs on Tesla’s alternating current, because for local delivery and spinning motors nothing has ever beaten it. But the long-distance backbone of the modern grid is increasingly Edison’s current — redeemed by physics he never had, put to work for reasons he never imagined.

History settled the question the way it usually does: slowly, on the merits, with no particular regard for who lied along the way. Edison got the credit he wanted, the light bulb and the statues. What gets left out of the story is that when the better idea arrived, he didn’t beat it. He tried to frighten people away from it, and he was willing to spend lives doing it.

We have seen that move since. We will see it again. When a man can’t win on the truth, his next play is always to make you afraid of it. The current changed. The trick never does.

Appendix: Reading the Wires

You can estimate the voltage of any power line over your head without a meter, a ladder, or a death wish. Count the insulators.

The insulators are the honest part of the system. High voltage will leap through open air if you let it get close enough, and the higher the voltage, the farther it can jump. So the wire has to be held away from the grounded steel by a string of porcelain or glass discs, and the length of that string is dictated by physics, not marketing. Each disc is good for roughly ten to fifteen thousand volts. Count the discs, multiply, and the line confesses.

Start with the wooden pole on your street. The wires up top sit on single squat insulators, one per wire, perched on the crossarm like doorknobs. No string at all. That is distribution — typically 7,200 to 14,400 volts per wire. The cable sagging from the pole to your house carries 120/240 volts and earns nothing but a little spool the size of a yo-yo.

The steel towers are where counting pays. Four to six discs in the string and you are under a 69,000-volt subtransmission line, the kind that feeds substations around town. Seven to nine discs, 115,000 volts. Ten or so, 138,000. Fourteen to sixteen, 230,000 — a workhorse of the regional grid. Eighteen to twenty discs and you have found a 345,000-volt line. Two dozen discs, 500,000 volts, the big interstate haulers marching across farmland on towers the size of office buildings. Thirty or more and you are standing under 765,000 volts, the heaviest AC line built in the United States, and you can sometimes hear it — a faint frying-bacon crackle as the voltage ionizes the air around the conductor.

Two honest caveats. Lines at altitude or near the coast carry a few extra discs, because thin air and salt grime both insulate worse, so the count runs slightly rich in the mountains and by the sea. And some newer lines use polymer insulators — one long gray rod with rubber fins instead of a stack of discs — which spoils the game entirely. But where the discs still hang, the arithmetic holds.

It may be the only piece of modern infrastructure that tells you the truth if you bother to count.
